About the Author

Sir Dermot Turing was educated at Sherborne and Cambridge, like his uncle, Alan Turing, before him. After completing his DPhil in Genetics at New College, Oxford, Dermot moved into the legal profession, working first for HM Treasury Solicitor’s Department and then for Clifford Chance, where he was a partner from 1999-2014. As Alan Turing’s nephew, Dermot has followed closely the gradual revelation of the achievements of the Bletchley codebreakers from the first release of materials in 1975 and the reopening of Bletchley Park to the public in the early 1990s. Great explanation

I’m sorely disappointed with this biography of Alan Turing, one of the 20th century’s greatest mathematicians. He was the lead cryptographer at Bletchley Park and helped break the German’s Enigma codes, significantly hastening the end of the War in Europe. To this end, his intellect led to the development of the digital computer.Within this manuscript is a plethora of eminent persons, important places, and critical events. The failure to include an index is unforgivable. Accordingly, this dereliction negates this work as a reference book. The author jumps about chronically, fails to complete scenes—leaving us hanging, wanders off on tangents, and stuffs the text with copies of notes, scribblings, letters, memos, and telegrams, documents (official and other). Except for a few, he could have summarized those of major import and placed others of significance in Addenda. So much of Turing’s life could have been brought forth with this biography to make it soar and do honor to this extraordinary man. Rather, the book is unremarkable in all measures and minimizes the memory of Alan Turning to a faretheewell. There is a surfeit of information available about Turning that the author should have explored. To this day, we do not know definitively why Alan Turing committed suicide at the young age of forty-two in 1954. Some suggest that his felo-de-se resulted from his conviction in an English court of homosexual behavior. Others postured that he was murdered—for reasons unknown.Unfortunately, the author bogged the text in incoherence and squandered far too much of the manuscript on irrelevance. For example, the first seventy pages discuss Turing’s early life in agonizing detail. Three pages would do. Alternately, he gives little mention of Turing’s accomplishments at Bletchley Park. Here was a golden opportunity to highlight the details of Alan’s endeavor and discoveries in this super-secret, code-breaking operation.

Really a good read describing Alan Turing's life/times & his involvement with enigma during WWII & first multi-use computers in Great Britain. Gave me enough information on early computers without being technical to get me interested although you have to read 1/2 book to get to WWll & after. Chapter 7 is where book starts about multi-use computers we are familiar with. Until that time we had single-use computers, from what I understand.

Probably more information than most books about Alan Turing. That said, well researched and interesting book.

A very informative book with lots of documentation as would be expected from a Turing relative.

as advertised, well packed

Review by Jan Slimming: This is the first book I have fully delved into for background reference to Alan Turing's personality and the people who influenced him. While there are copious amounts of other information about the work Alan Turing achieved in World War Two, Dermot Turing's account helps to corroborate personal research into my mother's story, also a Bletchley Park codebreaker. His descriptions leading up to work at Bletchley, his work there and after the war have helped clarify any gaps left by the other information, especially the section on mental health at the end. 'Prof' is an enjoyable read and I highly recommend this to others who also have a personal connection to Bletchley Park, computers - both in the UK and USA - and Manchester University.
